Why is the AVCP 1 system important for fire performance?

When it comes to safety-critical characteristics, such as reaction to fire, European regulations demand the highest levels of control and supervision.

The AVCP 1 system guarantees that:

What is the AVCP system and why is it key to the CE marking of construction products?

Safety, quality and reliability are fundamental aspects of the construction sector. To ensure that products entering the European market meet verified performance standards that remain consistent over time, the regulations establish the so-called internationally AVCP (Assessment and Verification of Constancy of Performance).

These systems form part of the regulatory framework set out in Regulations (EU) No 305/2011 and (EU) No 2024/3110 on Construction Products (CPR) and define the responsibilities of both the manufacturer and the notified bodies during the CE marking process.

In other words, the AVCP system sets out how a product’s performance is verified and what level of external control must be applied to ensure that such performance remains consistent over time.

About FM 4880, 4881 and 4882

FM Approvals standards form part of a certification framework developed by FM Global, an international organisation specialising in industrial insurance and risk management, which assesses products through independent testing and manufacturing audits. 

• – FM 4880: this is the base standard for insulation boards and finishing materials, which assesses their contribution to fire development through full-scale tests, analysing aspects such as fire spread, heat release and the stability of the insulating core under high temperatures. 

• – FM 4881: this focuses on façade systems and external walls. It extends the requirements of FM 4880 by incorporating additional assessments relating to outdoor conditions, including performance in the face of severe weather conditions such as wind or hail. 

• – FM 4882: is designed for smoke-sensitive environments (e.g. the pharmaceutical or food industries) and incorporates specific requirements to limit smoke generation and density in the event of a fire, whilst also maintaining the fire performance requirements set out in FM 4880. 

These standards define specific test methods and assessment criteria under controlled conditions. Certification is granted when the product meets these requirements within the established test context.

What are FM certifications?

An FM certification is a technical recognition that confirms that a product or system has passed rigorous testing, reproduces real-life risk scenarios and maintains reliable performance.

Some key standards for panels are FM 4880, FM 4881 and FM 4471, the latter being the specific standard for insulated metal roofing.

• – This is not a certification of the insulated product.
• – It is a certification of the system, i.e. panel + fixings + joints + installation method.
• – FM Approvals certifies the performance of the installed assembly.
• – The certification is not granted by the panel manufacturer, but by FM Approvals after independent testing.

What is the FM 4471 standard and why is it so important?

The FM 4471 standard applies exclusively to insulated metal roofing systems. It focuses on validating their performance in terms of fire resistance, wind resistance, walkability, and hail impact.

The HI-QuadCore 2.0 XT and HI-QuadCore 2.0 CT roof panel systems have undergone the following tests:

1.Fire performance tests: evaluation of the system’s performance when exposed to direct flames and heat on both sides of the panel. They evaluate:

• – How the insulating core responds to heat.
• – Whether the panel maintains its structural integrity. (Detachment of inflamed particles)

2.Wind resistance: Simulation of extreme suction and wind pressure to verify the fastening and stability of the system. They evaluate:

• – There must be no detachment, fracture, or deformation of any component.

• – There must be no separation, permanent deformation, detachment, or fracture within the panel cover assembly.
  
  

3.Foot traffic resistance. They evaluate:

• – No perforation of the panel ceiling.
• – No separation or detachment of the side overlaps.
  
  

4.Hail impact: Resist the effects of hail. During this test, the coating is evaluated for signs of punctures, chips, flaking, blisters, cracks, or fissures.

5.Manufacturing audits: FM Approvals periodically audits factories to confirm that the same level of quality as in the initial tests is maintained.

In the world of construction, fire safety is essential. Today, at Huurre, we are celebrating a new success in our range of fire compartmentation solutions. A historic achievement: our HI-QuadCore 2.0 FK DUAL panel breaks the ceiling of fire resistance certificates for organic cores, achieving an EI 120 rating for a thickness of 230 mm.

What does EI 120 mean? 

EI 120 is a classification that indicates that a building element offers fire resistance for 120 minutes, meeting two key criteria:

-E (Integrity): the panel maintains its structure without allowing flames or hot gases to pass through for 120 minutes.

-I (Insulation): it limits heat transmission, preventing the temperature on the unexposed side from exceeding the established limits. The average temperature must not exceed +140°C. At no point must it exceed +180°C during the entire 120-minute period. 

Results that exceed the standard

Although the official certification is EI 120, the test results are even more impressive.

If we analyse the exact result of the test passed, we see that the system achieved 136 minutes for thermal insulation (I) and 245 minutes for structural integrity (E). This information is reflected very concisely and transparently in the technical data sheet.

The building stands between 9 and 10 metres tall, with its façade featuring HI-PIR STM panels manufactured by Huurre.

The fire originated in the electrical box located within the office area of the warehouse. When the employee who noticed the smoke opened the door, airflow entered, intensifying the situation. The hot, dark smoke quickly descended and spread through the wood and polycarbonate of the office, making it impossible to extinguish it manually.

Over 50% of the roof skylights melted, indicating that temperatures exceeded 300ºC. Despite the intense heat, the warehouse’s metal structure remained intact, and neither the façade nor the roof panels collapsed.

The HI-QuadCore 2.0 FK DUAL sandwich panel with EI 90 fire resistance combines cutting-edge organic insulation, optimising thermal efficiency, with a lambda conductivity of just 0.019 W/mK. This panel provides compartmentalisation for buildings, achieving a rating of up to 90 minutes of insulation and integrity (EI 90) for panel thicknesses of 200 mm, without the need for additional silicone on the joint between panels, which facilitates installation and improves the overall performance of the system.

In addition, the design of the longitudinal joint has been improved on the basis of its predecessor, the HI-F cold storage panel, which enhances its long-term performance and efficiency.

Commitment to the environment

One of the greatest challenges in modern construction is reducing CO2 emissions. Huurre emphasises that the building stock contributes to CO2 emissions in a similar way to the automotive industry, in both the residential and industrial sectors. The HI-QuadCore 2.0 FK DUAL panel is manufactured in such a way that both the steel and its metallic and organic coatings are free from SVHCs (‘Substances of Very High Concern’), in accordance with the requirements of the European REACH regulation.

Huurre has launched its new HI-QuadCore 2.0 FK DUAL refrigerated panels, featuring EI-90 fire resistance. These panels are ideal for fire-separating applications in high-insulation environments such as the agri-food industry, cold storage facilities, laboratories, and clean rooms.

Manufactured with four possible finishes and several highly durable coating options, the panel incorporates a new FK joint that improves performance and simplifies installation.

Fire resistance, achieving EI-90 resistance (for 200 mm thick panel or more), EI-60 (150 mm panel or more) and EI-30 (80 mm panel or more), certified by tests according to EN 13501-2:2016 (see assembly conditions).
