<p>An FM certification is a technical recognition that confirms that a product or system has passed rigorous testing, reproduces real-life risk scenarios and maintains reliable performance.</p>



<p>Some key standards for panels are FM 4880, FM 4881 and FM 4471, the latter being the specific standard for insulated metal roofing.</p>

<li>&#8211; It is a certification of the system, i.e. panel + fixings + joints + installation method.</li>



<li>&#8211; FM Approvals certifies the performance of the installed assembly.</li>

<p>The FM 4471 standard applies exclusively to insulated metal roofing systems. It focuses on validating their performance in terms of fire resistance, wind resistance, walkability, and hail impact.</p>

<p>1.Fire performance tests: evaluation of the system&#8217;s performance when exposed to direct flames and heat on both sides of the panel. They evaluate:</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>&#8211; How the insulating core responds to heat.</li>



<li>&#8211; Whether the panel maintains its structural integrity. (Detachment of inflamed particles)</li>



<li>&#8211; Flame spread.<br><br></li>
</ul>



<p>2.Wind resistance: Simulation of extreme suction and wind pressure to verify the fastening and stability of the system. They evaluate:</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>&#8211; There must be no detachment, fracture, or deformation of any component.</li>
</ul>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>&#8211; There must be no separation, permanent deformation, detachment, or fracture within the panel cover assembly.<br><br></li>
</ul>



<p>3.Foot traffic resistance. They evaluate:</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>&#8211; No perforation of the panel ceiling.</li>



<li>&#8211; No separation or detachment of the side overlaps.<br><br></li>
</ul>



<p>4.Hail impact: Resist the effects of hail. During this test, the coating is evaluated for signs of punctures, chips, flaking, blisters, cracks, or fissures.<br><br></p>



<p>5.Manufacturing audits: FM Approvals periodically audits factories to confirm that the same level of quality as in the initial tests is maintained.<br></p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading has-large-font-size"><strong><strong>What&nbsp;does&nbsp;EI 120 mean?</strong></strong><em>&nbsp;</em></h2>



<p class="has-text-align-left">EI 120 is a classification that indicates that a building element offers fire resistance for 120 minutes, meeting two key criteria:<br><br>-E (Integrity): the panel maintains its structure without allowing flames or hot gases to pass through for 120 minutes.</p>



<p class="has-text-align-left">-I (Insulation): it limits heat transmission, preventing the temperature on the unexposed side from exceeding the established limits. The average temperature must not exceed +140°C. At no point must it exceed +180°C during the entire 120-minute period.&nbsp;<br><br><br></p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading has-large-font-size"><strong>Results that exceed the standard</strong></h2>



<p>Although the official certification is EI 120, the test results are even more impressive.</p>



<p>If we analyse the exact result of the test passed, we see that the system achieved 136 minutes for thermal insulation (I) and 245 minutes for structural integrity (E). <p>Fire performance of KS1000 AWP PIR core sandwich panels manufactured by Kingspan.</p>



<p>The fire occurred outside a large Audi dealership in Belgium in October 2014. It was an intentional fire.</p>



<p>The building is clad in a KS1000 AWP sandwich panel steel frame with a 100mm thick FM Approved certified PIR core manufactured by Kingspan and comprises a single-storey showroom and workshop and an internal mezzanine for additional vehicles at the rear.</p>



<p>Conclusions</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>The PIR core sandwich panels suffered a fire that likely lasted at least 15 minutes after ignition.</li>



<li>It is likely that the coating was subjected to a maximum incident radiative heat flux of at least 31.8 kW/m2 over a period of at least 10 minutes.</li>



<li>Sandwich panels exposed to these conditions suffered damage to the level of delamination of the exposed steel skin of the panels, separating it from the PIR core, removal of the paint layer and pyrolysis of the PIR core material to a depth of approximately 40mm.</li>



<li>There are no signs of fire spreading inside the panels.</li>

<p>A large fire occurred outside a furniture store in Presov, Slovakia &#8211; a large commercial building with a concrete frame and flat roof clad with Kingspan PIR façade panels. The building measures approximately 100 metres by 40 metres and is approximately 8.5 metres high.</p>



<p>The fire occurred in a kitchen area located approximately 4 feet from an exterior wall. The fire affected the combustible contents of the barbecue and 5 propane gas cylinders. At the time of the fire, the flames reached over 10 metres in height and directly affected the surface of the panels. más de 10 metros de altura y afectaron directamente a la superficie de los paneles.</p>



<p>Conclusions:</p>



<p>The fire was so intense that it managed to melt the aluminium composite panel used in the shop mascot sign in the short exposure period of 10 minutes.</p>



<p>There is clear evidence that the materials used in the construction of the shop mascot sign and the perimeter parapet light strip contributed to the spread of the fire and were the cause, according to the initial assessment by the fire brigade, of the external façade also being damaged by flames.</p>



<p>The core of the Kingspan PIR façade panels was charred to a depth of approximately 10mm in the area directly affected by the fire and the outer layer of the panels was peeled away from the core in these areas.</p>



<p>Despite the intensity of the fire, the Kingspan PIR core did not spread within the panel to areas away from the direct impact area of ​​the fire.</p>



<p>After extinguishing the fire outside the wall panels, the fire brigade found no signs of smoldering or flames inside.</p>



<p>The fire did not spread to the interior of the store. The effects were so small that the store was able to reopen about 3.5 hours after the fire.</p>
